Do I have to know anything about music to join band? NO! You do not have to have any experience! We'll teach you everything you need to know! Who will be in band? More than 100 of your friends will be in our program! We have athletes, choir members, National Junior Honor Society members, and many more students involved in a variety of clubs and organizations. Band is a great place to make new friends! What are the advantages to being in band? You will have an opportunity to bring your musical talent to life. We will be going on trips throughout the year, performing concerts and throwing parties.
Does it cost a lot of money to be in band? The biggest cost will be the instrument. Good new and used instruments will be available at most music stores. You can also rent an instrument at a fairly low rate per month. More expensive instruments can be rented through the school board for a yearly maintenance fee.
What instruments are available for me to play? Band students can choose from the following instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, alto and tenor saxophone, bassoon, trumpet, french horn, baritone, trombone, tuba and percussion. Can I take two electives next year? Students are only allowed to take one elective because of the new PE requirement. In Band, you will have the opportunity to excel in music by studying an instrument for an entire year, and for many years to come. Band offers you the chance to belong to a very special team, and on THIS team, EVERYONE plays!!!!
How do I know what instrument I should play? When you and your parents attend instrument fittings, you will have an opportunity to play the instruments you are interested in. From your top three choices, Ms. Thompson will tell you what instrument with which you would be the most successful.
What will the band director look for in my instrument selection? The director will look for a good attitude, a desire to be in band, and a willingness to work and have fun. We also look at teeth and mouth formation, hand and finger coordination, and the band’s instrumentation needs. How do I join? You will need to select Band as your first elective choice and get in touch with Ms. Thompson. (contact information on the home page.) What kind of instrument should I buy?
